Periodontal Therapy
Gum Infection Treatment
When gum disease strikes, the gums become inflamed and infected. Fighting this infection is part of the treatment to stop the disease in its tracks. Deep cleanings to remove tartar buildup and bacteria is part of fighting the infections. Special mouthwash and other medications can also be used to clear the infection and allow the gums to heal. In earlier stages of gum disease, controlling and stopping the infection can be enough to start the gums on the road to health with continued home care and professional cleanings.
Scaling and Root Planing
When periodontitis begins to affect the health of the gum tissue, the gums can retract from the teeth and leave large pockets. These deep pockets around the tooth root can be almost impossible to clean with home care and need professional care. To clear away the tartar on the roots, a procedure is used that scales away the tartar below the gum line on the tooth root. Once the tartar is removed, the root is planed to make it smooth, promoting healing of the gum tissue. Since scaling and root planing occur below the gums, anesthesia is needed to numb the area while this treatment is performed.
